When importance was given to maritime and the protection of the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts during the Ottoman Empire, the importance of the Ağaçeri Nomads was diminished, most of them settled down and established nomad camping sides and villages in certain regions. The word Ağaçeri had also become Tahtacı in time.
In fact, in the 18th century archives, it was mentioned that the Tahtacı Communion settled in Teke, Menteşe Hüdavendigar and Aydın. According to the archives, one of the two major Tahtacı centers in the Western Aegean was the Yanınyatır Society in İzmir Narlıdere and the other was the Hacı Emirli Society in Aydın Reşadiye.
Çobanlı was the strongest and most crowded of the 12 groups connected to the Izmir Narlıdere Society.
The Tahtacı Nomads considered themselves as Muslims who opposed to the Umayyad persecution and advocated true Islam and belonged to the Caferi sect. They had deep respect and love for Hz. Muhammad and Hz. Ali. They had nothing to do with the Hacıbektaş Society.
History of the village
Bademler village is connected to Urla district center. The village, located at the beginning of the Urla Peninsula, is 9 kilometers away from Urla, 10 kilometers away from Seferihisar and 35 kilometers away from İzmir.
One of the most important features of the village people is to act in unison. There is no discrimination between men and women in the village. Women work and are respected as much as men.
Those who think about the work to be done and give suggestions think not only of
themselves but the whole village. The greatest guides are the Qur’an and the old and worldly-wide people who know the Qur’an well, interpret it impartially, and do not look after their own benefits.
The village people, who are used to go over the matter with a fine-toothed comb, gather again and again and discuss and finally decide. All villagers obey the decision. The whole village people are responsible for the cleanliness and care of the village, the peace and security of the village people, the education of the village children.
Since the idea of establishing a cooperative for buying and
selling the items needed by the villagers was cheaper, a consumption cooperative is established in the village.
The number of members of the consumption cooperative, which is comprised of 8 people from the villagers, has reached to 33 at the end of the first year. But this was just the beginning. The consumption cooperative of Bademler village attracted great attention, even neighboring villages have started their shopping from the cooperative.
The number of peasants without fields and lands in Bademler village was high. One of the greatest desires of the village people was to make them landowners. However, the financial situation of the village people was insufficient.
It was gathered and spoken, discussed, consulted. Our citizens, who were not in good condition in those years, went to work in Germany and other European countries to earn money.
The consumption cooperative was turned into a village development cooperative in the year 1962. The number of members of the cooperative was 74. 53 cooperative members were sent to work abroad. These members promised that they would send some of their earnings to the cooperative.
People were faithful and adhered to the promises made. The saying ”Union makes strength” was proven once more.
Development Cooperative
The development cooperative established in 1962 by Bademler peasants is Turkey’s first development cooperative and it became a model to many development cooperatives founded later.
There were empty lands near the small, less grounded Bademler village where no
sowing and planting were made. With the money sent by the members of the cooperative who were sent abroad to work, first of all these idle lands and tools, equipment and machines that would be used during the correction of these lands and put into use were purchased. Then, olive trees are planted with a planned work at high pressure. The aim is to establish an olive grove as well as poultry and stockbreeding.
The earnings of the village and the villagers increased and the appearance of the village of Bademler was changed. A health center and a library were established in the village, newspapers were issued and radio broadcasts started to be made. There were minibus services to the district center.
In the expanding and growing cooperative store, not only consumer goods, but also the needs of the villagers such as water bags, spraying machines, quality seeds and seedlings were sold, and land was sold in installments to those who wanted to own land.
That is why our Prophet said, “Our Lord looks at the correct work and intention of man”.
Another well-known imperative is:
“The best of man is the one who does favor and is beneficial to people.”
Bademler village development cooperative has been an example for many villages and the villages in the Izmir region have started to establish a development cooperative and in the year 1971 13 village cooperatives came together and founded Izmir Village Development Cooperatives Union in Izmir (Köy Koop.)
Bademler Today
Most of the residents of Izmir don’t know that the most part of the vegetables and fruits, olives, olive oils that are sold in the city and the trees, flowers and saplings that adorn the city for many years are coming from Bademler Village.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which closely monitors the work of the Bademler Village Development Cooperative, has been cooperating with the cooperative since 2010.
In the year 2018 the former Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu opened Bademler Wild Life Village after having signed a new purchase contract amounting to 4 million TL in Bademler Village and after the signing ceremony.
Wildlife Village
Bademler Natural Life Village, which Izmir residents had been waiting for impatiently, was an exemplary project of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. This project was a first and only in Turkey and was born from the desire of visitors coming daily to the Bademler Village.
The guests longing for nature and village life said, “we wish we had a small house and a small garden here. If we could live in the village environment for a few days in the fresh air.
If we may be able to walk away from the city and rest our heads.” Foreign tourists were also among those expressing these increasing demands.
Metropolitan Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu brought up the matter with Mehmet Sever, the Cooperative President. When the Chairman of the Cooperative approached the issue, the opinion of Urla District Governor Önder Can was received.
The necessary permits were obtained, studies were carried out, and the Metropolitan Municipality Natural Life Village was born.
On a part of the cooperative land in Bademler village was spent 7 million TL, bungalow houses, production plots, walking and cycling routes were built.
The Natural Life Village would be a recreation and production center, and the guests staying in the bungalow houses would produce what they want on the parcels in the cooperative land.
English and German brochures were printed and an English website was built for the promotion of the Natural Life Village abroad.
It is announced to those who are curious and want to see Bademler Village.

Osmanlı İmparatorluğu döneminde denizciliğe önem verilip Akdeniz ve Ege kıyıları koruma altın alınınca Ağaçeri Yörüklerinin önemleri azalmış, çoğu yerleşik yaşama geçip, belli yörelerde obalar ve köyler kurmuşlardır. Ağaçeri kelimesi de zamanla Tahtacı olmuştur.
Nitekim 18. Yüzyıl kayıtlarında Teke, Menteşe Hüdavendigar ve Aydın’a yerleştirilen Tahtacı Cemaati’nden söz edilir.
Bademler village of Izmir may be not only one of the most famous villages of Izmir,
but of the Aegean and perhaps of Turkey.
It is the people of the village who have made the tiny, less landed, poor Bademler, a rich and developed village. They worked together and beat the bushes in a surprising unity and solidarity and they trusted and supported each other and achieved great works.
Much has been said and written about the people of Bademler, their Turkishness has been questioned, their love and devotion to people, nature, work and production, hospitality, honesty, customs and traditions have been searched in every nook and cranny and eventually they are considered to be from the Tahtacı Nomads.
Tahtacı Nomads who migrated from Central Asia to Anatolia together with Oğuzlar were called as the Ağaçeri Nomads in history.
These Monads, which held the forested areas of Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia, moved to the Mediterranean and Aegean regions over time, because the Mediterranean and Aegean forests had been the leading sources of livelihood for the Venetians and pirates.

It is the people of the village who have made the tiny, less landed, poor Bademler, a rich and developed village. They worked together and beat the bushes in a surprising unity and solidarity and they trusted and supported each other and achieved great works.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which closely monitors the work of the Bademler Village Development Cooperative, has been cooperating with the cooperative since 2010.

It is the people of the village who have made the tiny, less landed, poor Bademler, a rich and developed village. They worked together and beat the bushes in a surprising unity and solidarity and they trusted and supported each other and achieved great works.

Nitekim 18. Yüzyıl kayıtlarında Teke, Menteşe Hüdavendigar ve Aydın’a yerleştirilen Tahtacı Cemaati’nden söz edilir.

It is the people of the village who have made the tiny, less landed, poor Bademler, a rich and developed village. They worked together and beat the bushes in a surprising unity and solidarity and they trusted and supported each other and achieved great works.
